InIndian classical music,Sampūrṇa rāgas (संपूर्ण,Sanskrit for 'complete', also spelt assampoorna) have all sevenswaras in their scale. In general, the swaras in theArohana andAvarohana strictly follow the ascending and descending scale as well. That is, they do not havevakra swara phrases (वक्र, meaning 'crooked').
InCarnatic music, theMelakarta ragas are allsampurna ragas, but the converse is not true, i.e., allsampurna ragas are notMelakarta ragas. An example isBhairavi raga in Carnatic music (different from the Bhairavi of Hindustani music). Some examples ofMelakarta ragas areMayamalavagowla,Todi,Sankarabharanam andKharaharapriya.
