Sam Yates (born August 1983)[1][2] is a British director.[3] Yates grew up inStockport and attendedPoynton High School.[3] He was selected as aScreen International Star of Tomorrow,[4] named a rising star inThe Observer,[3] and featured inGQ Magazine's "Men of the next 25 years".[5] Yates has been described as "a major talent"[6] inThe Guardian, and "a director of unusual flair"[7] inThe Observer. He studied Education with English atHomerton College,Cambridge.
Yates directed and co-createdVANYA adapted bySimon Stephens and featuringAndrew Scott. The production won multiple awards including theOlivier Award forBest Revival,[8] Best Revival at theWhat'sOnStage Awards, and Best Actor forAndrew Scott at theCritics' Circle andEvening Standard Awards. The filmedNational Theatre Live production, directed by Yates, played in cinemas internationally and took over $2.5million at the box office.[9]
His productions have been nominated forOlivier Awards:Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical forMurder Ballad (2017),[10] andOutstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre forThe Phlebotomist byElla Road (2019).[11]
He directed feature debutMagpie featuringDaisy Ridley andShazad Latif. The film premiered atSouth by Southwest in 2024.[12]
