Sam Woods (born 7 May 1973)[1] is a New Zealand-born British civil servant. In July 2016, he became thedeputy governor of theBank of England, and head of thePrudential Regulation Authority (PRA), which oversees the UK banking and insurance sectors.[2][3][4] As head of the PRA, he succeededAndrew Bailey, who became the head of theFinancial Conduct Authority (FCA). Prior to his role at the Bank, Woods held positions atHM Treasury,UK Financial Investments, theIndependent Commission on Banking, and earlier atDiageo andMcKinsey.[5]
Woods was educated atWinchester College,[6] graduated in history and English from theUniversity of Oxford in 1995 and has an MBA fromINSEAD.[7] He is married to Mary Starks, an executive at OVO energy. They reside inStockwell, London, and have three children.[1]
