Sam Trammell (born January 29, 1969)[1] is an American actor, best known for his role asSam Merlotte on theHBO fantasy drama seriesTrue Blood. He was nominated for theTony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his performance as Richard Miller inAh, Wilderness!
Trammell was born inNew Orleans, Louisiana,[1][2] and was raised inCharleston, West Virginia.[3] He attendedBrown University, graduating in 1991.[4][5]
Trammell has worked in theater,Broadway,Off-Broadway, film, and television. His stage credits include a Tony Award-nominated performance inAh, Wilderness! atLincoln Center. Off-Broadway, he starred inDealer's Choice,My Night with Reg,If Memory Serves, andAncestral Voices, as well as inKit Marlowe at theJoseph Papp Public Theater.[6][7][8][9]
Trammell's big break came when he landed the role ofSam Merlotte on theHBO seriesTrue Blood. In 2013, he played Darrell Mackey in the drama filmWhite Rabbit. He played Hazel (Shailene Woodley)'s father, Michael Lancaster, in the 2014 filmThe Fault in Our Stars,[10] based on thenovel of the same name byJohn Green.
In 2019, Trammell starred in theNetflixhorror-drama series,The Order.[11]
He played Vice-president Benjamin Hayes in the final season ofHomeland who is signed in as Commander-in-chief after the sitting President is killed.
Trammell met actress Missy Yager in 2003 while performing theatre in New York City.[12] The couple's twin sons were born in August 2011.[12] The couple later parted ways at an unknown time.[13]
He has been in a relationship with actressEmmanuelle Chriqui since 2020.[14]
