
RSPB Saltholme is anature reserve located on theestuary of theRiver Tees betweenHaverton Hill andSeal Sands inCounty Durham, England.[1] It was opened in March 2009.[2] Situated across 1,000 acres, is the largest bird sanctuary operated by theRoyal Society for the Protection of Birds.[2] The land is owned by the Teesside Environment Trust.
Saltholme was originallysalt marsh.[1] It was reclaimed as agricultural land.[1] Salt was mined on the site from the 1820s.[1] Bell Brothers ofMiddlesbrough usedboreholes to mine salt from 1882.ICI donated the land to the Teesside Environment Trust in the early 1990s.
