1835 art exhibition in Paris

TheSalon of 1835 was anart exhibition held at theLouvre inParis. It was staged during theJuly Monarchy and was part of the tradition ofSalons dating back to theseventeenth century. Since theSalon of 1833 the exhibitions were held annually.

Notable amongst the works on display wasPaul Delaroche'shistory paintingThe Assassination of the Duke of Guise[1] whileHenri Decaisne also submitted a painting featuring a scene from the life of thesixteenth centuryDuke of Guise.[2]Eugène Delacroix exhibitedThe Prisoner of Chillon, based on a poem byLord Byron.[3]Jules Dupré, one of theBarbizon School influenced byJohn Constable, submitted alandscape paintingView of the Pastures of the Limousin.[4]

Antoine-Jean Gros, a leading painter stretching back to theNapoleonic era, displayed theNeoclassicalHercules and Diomedes. Its critical failure led to him committing suicide the same year.[5]Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres had exhibited at the Salon for several decade refused a request to submit hisPortrait of Louis-Mathieu Molé, apolitician soon afterwards to bePrime Minister, having taken over as director of theFrench Academy in Rome.[6] The previous directorHorace Vernet displayed thebiblicalRebecca at the Well.[7]

There was a sharp drop in the number ofprints andlithographs being exhibited.[8] It was followed by theSalon of 1836.
