TheSalim Khan family refers to the family ofSalim Khan which is a prominentIndianshow business family, and is one of the prominentBollywood film clans. Multiple members of the family have beenactors,screenwriters,film directors andproducers in theHindi film industry ofIndia. Salim, one half of the duoSalim–Javed, is one of the most famous screenwriters in the history ofIndian cinema. His son, actorSalman Khan, has been the prominent face of the family since the 1990s, as one of the biggestBollywoodmovie stars in history of Indian cinema.

Salim was born in 1935 inIndore in theCentral Provinces and Berar inBritish India. His father was an immigrant fromAfghanistan who migrated and settled in Indore (now inMadhya Pradesh). The family also has roots inJammu and Kashmir, from the father of Salma Khan (born Sushila Charak), Salim's first wife. Some members of the family also have roots inKerala (ex-wife of Arbaaz KhanMalaika Arora through her maternal side),Punjab (Atul Agnihotri, Seema Sachdev andMalaika Arora through her paternal side) andBurma (Helen).[2][3][4]

Salim Khan is a screenwriter, who wrote the screenplays, stories and scripts for numerousBollywood films. InHindi cinema, Khan is best known for being one half of the prolific screenwriting duoSalim–Javed, along withJaved Akhtar. The duo Salim-Javed were the first Indian screenwriters to achieve star status,[10] becoming the most successful Indian screenwriters of all time.[11][12]

Salim-Javed revolutionisedIndian cinema in the 1970s,[13] transforming and reinventing the Bollywood formula, pioneering the Bollywoodblockbuster format,[12] and pioneering genres such as themasala film[14] and theDacoit Western.[15] Salim Khan was also responsible for creating the "angry young man" character archetype and launchingAmitabh Bachchan's career.[16] Salim-Javed won sixFilmfare Awards, and their films are among thehighest-grossing Indian films of all time, includingSholay (1975), the highest-grossing Indian film ever at the time, as well as films such asSeeta Aur Geeta (1972),Zanjeer (1973),Deewaar (1975),Kranti (1981), and theDon franchise.

Ever since the blockbusterMaine Pyar Kiya (1989), has been known for being one of the three biggestmovie stars of Bollywood since the 1990s, along withAamir Khan andShah Rukh Khan, collectively known as the threeKhans of Bollywood. He is often known for starring in blockbustermasala films, a genre that was originally pioneered by his father Salim Khan.[3]
