TheSalaca (Estonian:Salatsi jõgi) is a river in northernLatvia.[1] It flows fromLake Burtnieks inVidzeme, 90 km, to theGulf of Riga. The river flows through three towns,Mazsalaca,Staicele andSalacgrīva. The riverbanks featureDevonian red sandstone cliffs, and many caves and rapids as well. The river gives its name to a dialect ofLivonian (Salaca Livonian[2]) spoken on its upper banks into the 19th century, which is today extinct.
