Saizana (unvocalizedGe'ez: ሠዐዘነśʿzn)[1] was the brother ofKingEzana of Axum, who changed the official religion of theAxumite Kingdom toChristianity. That kingdom abutted theRed Sea.
According to the historianTyrannius Rufinus, he was converted toChristianity with his brother Ezana by the missionaryFrumentius. With his brother, he resisted the attempts of theChristianRoman emperorConstantius II to relieve Frumentius of his post as bishop and replace him with anArian (which was a different sect of Christianity).
Saizana was sent by King Ezana with his other brother Hadefa (alternatively spelled Adiphan, Adefa) to quell an uprising by theBeja. The two brothers were victorious, and six Beja tribes (4400 people) were relocated to a province calledMatlia, which is believed to have been situated similarly to the modern province ofBegemder inEthiopia.[2]
He is considered asaint by theCoptic Church, with afeast day of October 1. He is also acknowledged as a saint in theRoman Catholic Church andEastern Orthodox Church.
