Saint-Samson-sur-Rance is located on the banks of theRance river, near the town ofDinan , about 20 miles (32 km) fromDinard andSaint-Malo , and 45 minutes fromSaint-Brieuc andRennes by car.
The locality is named afterSaint Samson of Dol .[ 3]
The presence of themenhir de la Tremblais indicates that humans have lived in this area since at least theNeolithic .
In theMiddle Ages , the parish ofSaint-Samson-jouxte-Livet , enclosed in the Bishopric of Saint-Malo, was part of theAncient Diocese of Dol .
In 1790, during theFrench Revolution , the parish was namedSaint-Samson and elected as a commune.
