Saboyá is a town and municipality in theWestern Boyacá Province, part of theColombiandepartment ofBoyacá.[1]
Saboyá is an Italian name brought by European colonizers.[2]
Before theSpanish conquest of the Muisca on the central highlands of the ColombianAndes, Saboyá was ruled by acacique with the same name.
The firstencomendero of Saboyá was Pedro de Galeano, brother ofMartín Galeano and soldier in the army ofHernán Pérez de Quesada, brother of SpanishconquistadorGonzalo Jiménez de Quesada. Modern Saboyá was founded on October 4, 1556.[1]
Simón Bolívar visited Saboyá on three occasions: January 2, 1821, September 6, 1827 and June 9, 1828.[1]
Main economical activities in Saboyá areagriculture andlivestock farming. Among the agricultural productspotatoes,maize and the fruitscuruba,blackberries,tree tomatoes andstrawberries are cultivated.[1]
