North Britain was a 7,189 GRTCargo ship that was built in 1945 byLithgows,Port Glasgow asEmpire Cyprus for theMinistry of War Transport (MoWT). She was sold into merchant service in 1948 and renamedNorth Britain. In 1962, she was sold toHong Kong and renamedJesselton Bay, serving until 1968 when she was scrapped.
The ship was built in 1945 byLithgows Ltd,Port Glasgow.[1] She was yard number 1005.[2]
The ship was 433 feet (132 m) long, with a beam of 56 feet (17 m).[3]
The ship was propelled by atriple expansion steam engine.[1]
Empire Cyprus was launched on 18 April 1945, and completed in June.[1] She was operated under the management of Charlton, McAllum & Co Ltd.[3] Her port of registry wasGreenock and theCode Letters GFWV were allocated.[4] She departed from theClyde on her maiden voyage on 23 June 1945, bound forNew York,United States. Over the next six months, she would visitPort Said, andSuez,Egypt;Colombo,Ceylon;Calcutta,India; andRangoon andKyaukpyu,Burma.[5]
In 1947, management was transferred to Hugh Roberts & Son,Newcastle upon Tyne.[3] In 1948, she was sold to North Shipping Co Ltd and renamedNorth Britain. She remained under the management of Hugh Roberts & Son.[1] On 28 January 1952,North Britain ran aground offFiji. She was refloated later that day.[6] In 1962,North Britain was sold to Kinabatangan Shipping Co Ltd,Hong Kong and renamedJesselton Bay. She was operated under the management of United China Shipping Ltd, Hong Kong. She arrived on 2 April 1968 atKaohsiung,Taiwan for scrapping.[1]
