Ileal sodium/bile acid cotransporter, also known asapical sodium–bile acid transporter (ASBT) andileal bile acid transporter (IBAT), is abile acid:sodium symporterprotein that in humans is encoded by theSLC10A2gene.[5][6]

ASBT/IBAT is most highly expressed in theileum, where it is found on thebrush border membrane ofenterocytes. It is responsible for the initial uptake ofbile acids, particularly conjugated bile acids, from the intestine as part of theirenterohepatic circulation.[7]

As a drug target

[edit]

Severalmedications to inhibit IBAT are underdevelopment. They includeelobixibat, under development for the treatment ofconstipation andirritable bowel syndrome,[8] andvolixibat, under development for the treatment ofnonalcoholic steatohepatitis.[9]
