Sports Club Tavriya (Ukrainian:Спортивний клуб "Таврія") was a Ukrainian football club fromSimferopol. Tavriya was a member of theUkrainian Premier League from its founding and won the firstUkrainian Premier League making them one of three teams that have ever held this title.
After theannexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in 2014, the club was forced to cease its existence after 56 years, while in occupiedCrimean peninsula a new club composed of some of its staff and players joined theRussian Football Union under the new nameFC TSK Simferopol.[2]
In June 2015, theFootball Federation of Ukraine and the Tavriya's president announced it would re-establish the club and its new home would beKherson.[3] On 29 August 2016, club was added to Group 2 of the2016–17 Ukrainian Football Amateur League. The revamped club is based inBeryslav,Kherson oblast.[4]
Prior to the start of the2020–21 Ukrainian Second League the club merged withFC Tavriya Novotroitske, this fusion continued to play under the original name of SC Tavriya Simferopol (in the 2020–21 Ukrainian Second League season).[5][6]
At the start of theRussian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, they were based inNova Kakhovka.[7] On 28 March 2022, Tavriya ceased club activities following the occupation ofKherson Oblast.[8]

The club was formed in 1958, under the nameAvanhard Simferopol and was based on the former Crimean champion 'Burevestnik Simferopol'.[9][10] In previous season Burevestnik played in the1957 Football Championship of the Ukrainian SSR and placed only 5th among 6 teams in its group. Nonetheless, Simferopol was granted to present its own football team at the all-Union football competitions next season. The newly formed football team was one of 32 football teams that were admitted to the All-Union football competitions in Class B in 1958 and one out of 8 from Ukraine. Tavriya played their first game in the1958 Soviet Class B against theYaroslav based clubKhimik. Sometime in 1963, Avanhard changed its name to Tavriya. The team was a member of the bigger SovietLokomotiv sports society for railway workers. In 1967 for Tavriya in Simferopol was built anew stadium.[11] Overall, Tavriya played 132 clubs from 113 cities. They played their last match of the Soviet competition againstFC Uralmash Yekaterinburg.[citation needed]
After the fall of theSoviet Union, theUkrainian Premier League was formed. Tavria was one of its founders and eventually became the very firstUkrainian champion in1992, under theSimferopol born managerAnatoliy Zayaev, defeatingFC Dynamo Kyiv, Ukraine's most successful club in the final, held inLviv.Yuriy Hudymenko became the league's top scorer. More players from that era wereOleksandr Holovko, a defender who also played many years forUkraine national team, and captainSerhiy Yakovych Shevchenko, who scored the championship goal against Dynamo Kyiv. Having earned the right to participate in1992–93 UEFA Champions League, Tavryia were knocked out in the first round by Swiss clubFC Sion. The RussianSport-Express posted an article (No.3 (43), 25 January 2000, page 9) stating that the Ukrainian champions Tavria were threatened by theFootball Federation of Ukraine to compete at theCIS Cup in 1993.
Tavria was one of the five clubs to have until 2014 participated in every season of the Ukrainian Premier League. Their best performance in theUkrainian Cup came in2010, where they defeatedFC Metalurh Donetsk inthe final to win the competition. They had previously reached the final in1994, where they lost toFC Chornomorets Odesa in apenalty shootout.
After theannexation of Crimea by Russia, Tavriya asked permission from UEFA and FIFA to shift to theRussian league next season.[12] The club applied for a Russian license and changed its name toFC TSK Simferopol.[2] The club currently plays in theCrimean Premier League.
On 18 June 2015, theFootball Federation of Ukraine executive committee voted in favor of re-establishing the club now to be located inKherson (the largest Ukrainian city bordering Crimea).[3]Serhiy Kunitsyn, Tavriya's former president and also a formerPrime Minister of Crimea, was put in charge of the project.[3]
In August 2016, the revamped version of the club applied to play in the2016–17 Ukrainian Football Amateur League.[13] It did not enter this competition at first.[14] However, Tavriya was included to group 2 of2016–17 Ukrainian Football Amateur League on 29 August. Re-established club based in the city ofBeryslav inKherson Oblast.[15]
In November 2016, the club applied forFFU attestation in order to achieve professional status in the next season.[16] After finishing the 2016–17 season in the Amateur League, Tavriya was included intoPFL and promoted toUkrainian Second League in June 2017.[17] The club was included to group B of2017–18 Ukrainian Second League.
Prior to the start of the2020–21 Ukrainian Second League the club merged withFC Tavriya Novotroitske, but continued to play under its original name.[5][6]
On 28 March 2022 Tavriya ceased club activities after2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and subsequent temporary occupation ofKherson Oblast.[8]
