São Nicolau (Portuguese meaningSaint Nicholas) is amunicipality of thestate ofRio Grande do Sul,Brazil. It was founded in 1626 byJesuit priestRoque González y de Santa Cruz.[2] The population is 5,208 (2020 est.) in an area of 485.32 km2 (187.38 sq mi).[3] It is located 562 km west of the state capital ofPorto Alegre, northeast ofAlegrete. TheUruguay River, which forms theborder withArgentina, flows along the northwestern part of the municipality.
The municipality would be partially flooded by the proposedGarabí Dam.[4]
