Ryo Shibata (柴田 嶺,Shibata Ryō; born February 24, 1987) is a former Japanese competitivefigure skater. He currently competes inpair skating withNarumi Takahashi.
Shibata was born on February 24, 1987, inKushiro, Hokkaido, Japan.[1]
The Japanese media called Shibata "the JapaneseJohnny Weir".[2] He was able to perform aBiellmann spin in competition.
Competing inmen's singles, Shibata won two gold medals on theISU Junior Grand Prix series and qualified to twoISU Junior Grand Prix Finals. He appeared at the2003 and2006 World Junior Championships, finishing 12th both times, and at three seniorGrand Prix events.[3] He retired in 2010.[4]
On May 18, 2016, it was announced that Shibata had teamed up withpair skater,Narumi Takahashi, and that they would train inGeneva, Illinois, underStefania Berton andRockne Brubaker.[5]
As a team, Takahashi/Shibata won the bronze medal at the2017 Asian Open Trophy and the silver medal at the2017–18 Japan Championships.[1]
In March 2018, Takahashi announced her retirement from competitive figure skating and Shibata ultimately announced his retirement in July that same year.[6][7]
