In 2002, Ryan was named All-State Honorable Mention in soccer[10] and finished 6th at the state championship track meet in thepole vault.[11] Ryan graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a degree in music.

Music career

[edit]

Ryan joined the bandHavok in 2007, replacing later Speedwolf drummer Richie Tice, and shortly afterward the band got an offer from famed metal labelCandlelight Records with whom they ultimately signed a record deal.[12] Ryan contributed drum tracks and lyrics to Havok's 2009 debut albumBurn,[13] and appeared in the music video for the song "Morbid Symmetry".[14] Ryan toured with Havok for about 2 years, including the License to Thrash tour, but left Havok just before the official release ofBurn.[15]

In 2010 Ryan briefly joined up withFive Iron Frenzy guitaristMicah Ortega to form adeath metal band called Mordheim[16] which recorded a short demo calledBrutal Demonstrations before disbanding.[17] In 2011 Ryan was hired to record percussion on Amara Grace's albumCan't Keep A Sunrise Down.[18][19] In 2012 he was contacted by Rob Hubbard of Synthetic Minister[20] to record drums for a side projectgrunge/punk band called Amish Warfare. The resulting EP was titledImmaculate Misconception.[21][22]

In 2013, Ryan began working with Mackenzie Gault,[23] of the platinum sellingDenver bandFlobots, teaching drums at her music school, Denver Music Tree.[24] In June 2014, Ryan's website announced[25] that he had joined theswedish death metal bandBloodstrike and had recorded a demo calledNecrobirth. Bloodstrike features experienced band members including former members ofMausoleum Records artist Silencer and Root of All Evil Records artist Somnus.[26] Also in 2014, Ryan began teaching at the Aurora, CO branch of theSchool of Rock, a chain ofrock-oriented music schools.[27] In the late summer of 2015, Ryan's band Bloodstrike announced that they had signed with Redefining Darkness Records[28] and would be releasing the full-length album,In Death We Rot on September 25.[29][30]

In 2017, Ryan recorded a second album with Bloodstrike called Execution of Violence with a release date of October 13. Bloodstrike subsequently toured with Brazil's Forceps on their Mastering Extinction US tour.[31] Also in 2017, Ryan began filling in for Denver heavy metal and hard rock outfit Immortal Sÿnn as a live session drummer[32] while regular drummer Axel Berrios was indisposed.[33] This post would last into the summer of 2018 and included the US leg of Immortal Sÿnn's first tour.

Since 2019, Bloom has been on the Topper Marching Band staff[34] atLos Alamos High School inNew Mexico.

Publishing career

[edit]

As an instructional author, Ryan has published original books on bass drum technique, drum and bass breakbeats, drum rudiments, thrash metal drumming, andsubdivision and music reading. He has also transcribed two 19th century manuals into modern notation, translated Swiss and French military manuals into English, and reissued editions of multiple public domain drum books.

The first book wasDouble Bass Drumming Explained: A Comprehensive Reference on the Art and Science of Double Bass,[35] in 2012, which discusses doublebass drum technique, style, and theory.[36] The book draws on Ryan's own critically acclaimed[37][38] drumming techniques and his teaching experience.[39] Ryan published his second book,[40]Double Bass Drumming Explained Part 2: The Workbook in 2013. Where the first book was mostly text, this sequel is a traditional instructional method consisting of mainly beats and notated exercises for practice.

In 2016, Ryan published a combined and revised edition of his books calledThe Complete Double Bass Drumming Explained.[41] This edition fixed minor errors and added new topics, notably a section on cam shape, while condensing the previous two books into a single volume. In April 2017,The Complete Double Bass Drumming Explained[42] was picked up by publisherHudson Music and re-released in an exclusive digital ebook format.[43]

In March 2018, Ryan secured a second deal with Hudson Music for the publication of his book,Live Drum & Bass - Breakbeats and Electronic Music for Real Drummers.[44] This was Ryan's first offering outside of double bass instruction.[45]

In 2019, Bloom published two books. The initial publication was his third[46] book with publisher Hudson Music[47] calledEncyclopedia Rudimentia - The Ultimate Drum Rudiment Collection.[48] Encompassing over 850Drum rudiments, this book diverges from his earlier works for drum set by compiling basic rudimental snare exercises from different cultures and traditions includingDrum Corps International hybrid rudiments, AncientFife and drum corps rudiments, and European military rudiments alongside thePercussive Arts Society andNational Association of Rudimental Drummers standards. Later, he published his first work of non-fiction outside of music entirely, calledThe Forgotten Side of Bandelier,[49] which deals with the archeology and anthropology of theTsankawi[50] section ofBandelier National Monument.[51]

In 2020, Bloom also published two books. The first, an edition[52] ofCharles Stewart Ashworth's 1812Fife and Drum manual,A New, Useful, and Complete System of Drum Beating that updated the 19th century notation to 21st century standard drum music, was published in January. The second book was a method calledThrash Metal Drumming that detailed the types of beats and fills used in classic and modernthrash metal. It was published byHudson Music on October 28.[53]

Bloom again published two books in 2021. In April, he released an edition ofSamuel Potter's 1817 drum manualThe Art of Beating the Drum that updated the ambiguous 19th century notation to modern percussion music.[54] In June, he announced that Hudson would be releasing a book calledSubdivide and Conquer,[55] in collaboration with author Robert W. Miller,[56] a method for counting and reading rhythms.

In 2022, Bloom published an English translation of theSwiss military's World War I drum manualTambour-Ordonnanz für die Schweizerische Infanterie 1917,[57] which had only previously been available in French and German.

Bloom published two books in 2023. In February he released an English translation ofN. Pita [fr]'s 1885 rudimental manualMéthode de Tambour[58][59] and in MarchRudimental Grand Tour[60] was released, his first book with publisherMel Bay.[61]

In 2024, Bloom published three books. In January, an annotated re-printing ofThe Moeller Book,[62] bySanford A. Moeller, based on the first edition from 1925, followed by a July release ofItalian Rudimental Drumming,[63] an original publication that describes the historic military drumming tradition of theKingdom of Italy. He further published an annotated re-printing of Fred Poole's early 20th century manualSide Drum Tutor[64] in November.[65]
