Rupert Wainwright is an Englishfilm andtelevision director, with credits includingBlank Check (1994),The Sadness of Sex (1995) andStigmata (1999).[1] He is also amusic video producer and multiple award-winner.
British-born, Wainwright was one of the youngest directors accepted in the Discovery Program sponsored byColumbia Pictures. He established a reputation for making award-winningtelevision advertisements (includingReebok)[2] andmusic videos (most notablyM.C. Hammer).
Originally an actor, appearing inAnother Country (1984) andDreamchild (1985), Wainright later directed theABC filmDillinger (1991) starringMark Harmon. In 2005, he directed thesupernatural horror filmThe Fog.[3]
He also appeared in an episode of the reality TV showMillionaire Matchmaker, where love matchmaker and dating guruPatti Stanger was tasked with finding him a potential love match.
Wainwright attendedUCLA on aFulbright Scholarship where he started directingmusic videos.[4] He most notably produced and directed multiple videos forM.C. Hammer (such as "U Can't Touch This"), which contributed to Hammer becoming a worldwide phenomenon. He has also worked with artists such asN.W.A andMichael Jackson, winning fiveMTV Video Music Awards, aGrammy Award (including two nominations) and many other awards.[5]
Wainwright also directedPlease Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em: The Movie, along with John Oetjen (video producer), winning a Grammy forBest Music Video, Long Form at the33rd Grammy Awards.
