Rupert Francis John Carington, 7th Baron Carrington (born 2 December 1948), is a British banker,hereditary peer andcrossbench member of theHouse of Lords.
Lord Carrington has served asLord Great Chamberlain of England since the accession ofCharles III in September 2022. In that role, he took part in thecoronation of Charles III and Camilla.[1]
Carrington was born in 1948 as the third child and only son ofPeter Carington, 6th Baron Carrington (1919–2018), and his wife Ionanée McClean (1920–2009).[2] His father was at the time in the beginning of his political career and would later hold several prominent positions, including those ofDefence Secretary in theHeath ministry andForeign Secretary in thefirst Thatcher ministry, andSecretary General of NATO.
He was educated atEton College, and then theUniversity of Bristol, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree.[3]
Carrington has two sisters, Alexandra (born 1943), married to Captain Peter de Bunsen,[4] and Virginia (born 1946), married toHenry Cubitt, 4th Baron Ashcombe (divorced).[5]
His maternal grandfather was civil engineer and aviatorSir Francis McClean.[6] His patrilineal ancestor Thomas Smith was the founder ofSmith's Bank.[7]
Carrington worked at the merchant bankMorgan, Grenfell & Co. for seventeen years[8] before starting his own financial advisory business, Rupert Carington Limited, in 1987.[9][10] He is chairman of Vietnam Infrastructure Ltd. and ofSchroder AsiaPacific Fund,[11] and is an international adviser to theLGT Group.[8]
He succeeded his father asBaron Carrington in July 2018,[3] and became a member of theHouse of Lords in December of that year, after winning acrossbench hereditary peers' by-election, following the retirement ofLord Northbourne.[12]
On the accession ofCharles III in 2022, Carrington becameLord Great Chamberlain of England,[13] according to the hereditary rotation of the office among three noble families.[14]
Carrington married Daniela Diotallevi on 12 September 1989; they have three children:[15]
Lord Carrington was appointed aDeputy Lieutenant forBuckinghamshire in November 1999.[16]
