Ruisui Township[1] is arural township located in southernHualien County,Taiwan, and has a population of 10,944 inhabitants in 11 villages.
The population is composed ofHoklo,Hakka, andTaiwanese aborigines, most of whom areAmis. Agriculture and tourism are major industries.
DuringQing rule, the headquarters ofTaitung Prefecture was located in modern-day Ruisui, known then asTsui-be,[2] orTsui-boe[3] (Chinese:水尾;Pe̍h-ōe-jī:Chúi-bóe). ThoseChinese characters (水尾) were renderedMizuo in Japanese duringJapanese rule of Taiwan, but were later changed to瑞穗,Mizuho in 1917.[4] This written form was retained after theKuomintang takeover of Taiwan in 1945; the characters are pronouncedSūi-sūi andRuìsuì inTaiwanese andMandarin Chinese, respectively.[citation needed]
The township lies in an alluvial plain which located midway up theHuadong Valley between theCentral Mountain Range,Coastal Mountain Range and Wuhe Terrace. Rafting activity on theXiuguluan River often starts from the Ruisui Bridge.[citation needed]
