Royon (French pronunciation:[ʁwajɔ̃]) is acommune in thePas-de-Calaisdepartment in the Hauts-de-Franceregion of France[3] 10 miles (16 km) east ofMontreuil-sur-Mer in the valley of theCréquoise river.

History

The slopes of hills in the region were blocked by thorny hedges ofcréquiers, the wild plum, and these hedges were calledroyons, which may be the source of the name.[5]

The first mention ofRoyon is in 893 inGallia Christiana.[6] It is mentioned again in 1641 as 'Roion', and became 'Royon' in 1804.[7]
