
Royal Academy Exhibition of 1844 was the seventy sixth annualSummer Exhibition of the BritishRoyal Academy of Arts. It was held at theNational Gallery inLondon from 6 May to 27 July and featured submissions from leadingpainters,sculptors andarchitects of the earlyVictorian era.[1]
The best-known painting to feature in the exhibition wasTurner'sRain, Steam and Speed showing crossing theGreat Western Railway's recently openedMaidenhead Railway Bridge, designed byIsambard Kingdom Brunel.[2] Amongst the other sixoil paintings Turner displayed were three scenes ofVenice, a major theme of his work during the period.
Edwin Landseer, known for hisanimal paintings, submittedShoeing andThe Otter Speared, the later a depiction of anotter hunt inScotlandcommissioned by thepoliticianLord Aberdeen.William Collins displayed thelandscape paintingsSeaford, Sussex andMorning, Boulogne.[3][4] The French artistPaul Delaroche exhibited a religious painting.
ThePresident of the Royal AcademyMartin Archer Shee displayed a portrait of the veteranradical politicianSir Francis Burdett.[5]
