Israeli Historian
Roy Marom (Hebrew:רוֹעי מָרוֹם,Arabic:روعي مروم) is anIsraelihistorian andhistorical geographer. Marom is the curator of thePalestinian Rural History Project, which specializes in the history of thePalestiniancountryside during theOttoman andBritish Mandate periods.[1]
Marom acquired his education atTel Aviv University and theUniversity of Haifa.[2][3] He wrote hisdoctoral dissertation inMiddle Eastern studies. His doctoral advisors wereMahmoud Yazbak and Ido Shahar.[4] Marom was affiliated with theUniversity of California, Berkeley.[5] In 2024, he served as the Ernest S. FrerichsAnnual Professor at theAlbright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem.[1]
Marom has participated in theArchaeological Survey of Israel project, and isco-author of one of its survey maps.[6] Hecurated the archeological collections in Beit ha-Rishonim Museum (Even Yehuda) andal-Qasemi Academic College's Museum (Baqa al-Gharbiya).[7][8]
Marom is an associate of theJezreel Valley Regional Project and has ledinterdisciplinary projects about keyarchaeological sites inIsrael/Palestine, publishing works aboutLajjun,Ashdod-Yam,Ras al-'Ain,Ramat HaNadiv,Al-Shaykh Muwannis,al-Muzayri'a,Majdal Yaba,Mulabbis,Jindas, andHamama.[9]
Marom has specialized inlocal history of Arab villages andmoshavot, inspiringhikers and history enthusiasts alike.[10][11][12][13][14][15] Marom identified the inhabitants ofMulabbis, which preceded Petah Tikva, the first moshava.[16][17][18][19] Marom's studies of theForest of the Plain of Sharon enabledenvironmental conversation efforts to preserve the area's remainingMt. Tabor Oak trees.[20] Marom researched thefirst world war, discovering anOttoman militarycemetery near Even Yehuda.[21][22]
In 2018, Marom published anopinion piece about Palestinianland use before the establishment of KibbutzNir David among supposedly “swampy wastelands.” The piece drew significant press coverage in the context ofongoing social justice debates aboutownership andaccess rights to the 'Asi River inBeth She'an.[23][24][25][26][27]
Marom has been awarded national-level prizes and fellowships, including by theFulbright Association,Azrieli Foundation,Dan David Foundation, thePolonsky Academy at theVan Leer Jerusalem Institute, theMartin Buber Society of Fellows at theHebrew University (offered),Yad Ben Tzvi, theIsraeli Geographical Association andThe Middle East & Islamic Studies Association of Israel.[28]
