Roy Boateng (born 21 January 1996) is a Ghanaian formerfootballer who played as adefender.
Boateng was born inAccra, Ghana, and moved toRohnert Park, California, at the age of eight.[1][2] He attendedRancho Cotate High School in Rohnert Park, where he was a four-yearletterwinner as aforward on the soccer team in addition to playingbasketball andAmerican football as a sophomore.[1][2] However, his senior season was cut prematurely due to injury.[2]
Boateng played four years ofcollege soccer at theUniversity of California, Davis between 2015 and 2018, making 82 appearances for the Aggies, scoring six goals and tallying one assist.[2] He was converted to a defender by Aggies head coach Dwayne Shaffer, whoredshirted him in 2014 so he could learn the position from seniorRamón Martín del Campo.[1] Boating was named theBig West Conference Defensive Player of the Year in both his junior and senior seasons.[1]
While at college, Boateng appeared forUSL PDL sidePortland Timbers U23s in both 2016[3] and 2017,[4] andSan Francisco Glens in 2018.[5]
On January 11, 2019, Boateng was drafted 16th overall in the2019 MLS SuperDraft byNew York Red Bulls.[6] He signed for the Red Bull'sUSL Championship sideNew York Red Bulls II on March 8, 2019.[7][8] He was released by Red Bulls II on November 30, 2020.[9]
