Ross Thornton (23 October 1956 – 25 April 2024) was anAustralian rules footballer who played withFitzroy in theVFL during the 1980s.[1]
Thornton originally arrived at Fitzroy fromHampden Football League clubCamperdown in1975 but was unable to make the senior team so joinedVictorian Football Association clubPrahran. He returned to Fitzroy in1980 and became a regular fixture in their defence for the rest of the decade, usually occupying aback pocket from where he liked to run the ball up the ground. A personal highlight came in1984 when Thornton won Fitzroy'sBest and fairest award.
In 2003 Thornton was selected inPrahran's Team of the Century.
Thornton appeared onthe second season ofThe Amazing Race Australia with his daughter Tarryn,[2] and was eliminated in 8th place in Turkey on Episode 6.
In later years, Thornton was appointed to the Brisbane Lions Board.[3]
Thornton died from cancer on 25 April 2024, at the age of 67.[4]
