TheDiocese of Mangalore (Latin:Diocesis Mangalorensis) is aLatin Church ecclesiastical jurisdiction ordiocese of theCatholic Church located in the city ofMangalore,India. The diocese is asuffragan in theecclesiastical province of themetropolitanArchdiocese of Bangalore. At present, it comprises the whole civil districts ofDakshina Kannada andUdupi inKarnataka state. The area of the Diocese was collectively referred to asSouth Canara during theCompany rule in India, in the subsequentBritish India afterDirect rule from London commenced & in the early post-independenceBombay state, prior to theStates Reorganisation Act (1956). It was established as a separateApostolic Vicariate from theApostolic Vicariate of Verapoly in 1853, and was promoted to a diocese on 1 September 1886.
On Monday, July 16, 2012, it lost territory whenPope Benedict XVI erected the newRoman Catholic Diocese of Udupi (made up of the three civil townships of Udupi, Karkala & KUNDAPURA), which will also become part of the Province of Bangalore.[1]
