Rodrigo García Barcha (born 24 August 1959) is a Colombian and Mexican television and film director, screenwriter, author and former cinematographer, best known for his filmsNine Lives (2005),Mother and Child (2009),Albert Nobbs (2011),Last Days in the Desert (2015), as well as his work on theHBOdrama seriesIn Treatment.[2] He also created, wrote, and directed the award-winning web seriesBlue (2012–2015), starringJulia Stiles, for which he won anIAWTV Award in 2014.[2] In 2021 García released his first memoir,A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes: A Son's Memoir of Gabriel García Márquez and Mercedes Barcha.

Life and career

García was born inBogotá,Colombia, a son of Colombian Nobel-winner writerGabriel García Márquez andMercedes Barcha Pardo. Because of his father, he grew up aroundCarlos Fuentes,Álvaro Mutis,Julio Cortázar,Pablo Neruda andLuis Buñuel.[3]

García is married to Adriana Sheinbaum, a teacher who is the sister of Mexican presidentClaudia Sheinbaum.[4]

García has directed a variety of independent films, such as the award-winningNine Lives (2005), which was nominated for theWilliam Shatner Golden Groundhog Award for Best Underground Movie,[5] andAlbert Nobbs (2011), which screened at several film festivals, as well as episodes of severalHBO series, includingSix Feet Under,Carnivàle, andBig Love. He produced and developed theHBOdrama seriesIn Treatment.

He worked as acamera operator forCold Heaven,Reality Bites,A Walk in the Clouds,The Birdcage,Twilight andGreat Expectations, and as director of photography forGia andPoison Ivy.

In 2012, García andJon Avnet createdWIGS, a web channel part ofYouTube Original Channel Initiative that produces scripted drama mainly targeted to female audiences.[6] For WIGS, García created, wrote and directed several web series, notablyBlue, starringJulia Stiles, for which he won anIAWTV Award for Best Director – Drama in 2014.[2]
