TheRobertson Islands orRobertsons Islands are a group ofislands extending 6 km southward of the south-eastern extremity ofCoronation Island in theSouth Orkney Islands ofAntarctica. They were discovered and roughly charted by CaptainsGeorge Powell andNathaniel Palmer in December 1821 and named byJames Weddell in 1823.
The northern islands of the group (those north ofAtriceps Island), includingMatthews,Coffer, Steepholm andSkilling Islands with their associated islets and skerries, have been identified as anImportant Bird Area (IBA) byBirdLife International because they support substantialbreeding colonies, totalling about 35,000 pairs, ofchinstrap penguins.Snow petrels also breed in the area of the Divide – the narrow channel separating Matthews from Coronation Island at the northern limit of the IBA.[1]
