Robert Theodore McCall (December 23, 1919 – February 26, 2010) was an American artist, best known for hisspace art works.

Work

McCall was an illustrator forLife magazine in the 1960s,[1] created promotional artwork forStanley Kubrick's film2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)[2] andRichard Fleischer's productionTora! Tora! Tora! (1970)[3] and worked as an artist forNASA, documenting the history of theSpace Race. McCall was also production illustrator onStar Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)[4][5] and Walt Disney'sThe Black Hole (1979).[6] The character CommanderWilliam Riker expressed admiration for the work of "Bob McCall" in one episode of the television seriesStar Trek: The Next Generation.[citation needed]

McCall's work can be found onU.S. postage stamps, and also NASAmission patches such as forApollo 17.[7][8]

He has created murals for the walls of theNational Air and Space Museum, theNational Gallery of Art,The Pentagon,Epcot, andLyndon B. Johnson Space Center. McCall was also commissioned byThe Walt Disney Company to do a painting called "The Prologue and The Promise" for theEpcot attraction,Horizons in 1983. Guests could see the mural at the end of the attraction as they exited.[9][10]

McCall appeared as an imposter for aU.S. Air Force pilot on the June 24, 1963 episode ofTo Tell the Truth. He received one of the four possible votes from the panel.[11]

McCall died in 2010 ofheart failure inScottsdale, Arizona.
