Robert Pugh (born 3 November 1948) is a Welsh actor, known for his many television appearances, including the role ofCraster in theHBO seriesGame of Thrones.

Life and career

Pugh was born inTyntetown,Mountain Ash and attended Ynysboeth school down the road and grew up with his grandmother in Tynte, near Pontypridd. He decided to become an actor after watchingFrom Russia with Love at a cinema in Treforest with a cousin.[citation needed] A few years later he took night courses atMountview Academy of Theatre Arts in North London, before being accepted atRose Bruford College, where he graduated in 1976.[1]He appeared in the 1979 production ofDanger UXB as Sapper Powell, a young Royal Engineer in a Bomb Disposal Company during theSecond World War. He later appeared asHarold Wilson in the 2005Channel 4 dramaLongford and asHermann Göring in the 2006BBC drama-documentaryNuremberg: Nazis on Trial.[2] In 2007, he co-starred alongsideGenevieve O'Reilly andGeraldine James in theITV1 dramaThe Time of Your Life, in which he played a father whose 36-year-old daughter is recovering after an 18-year coma. In his early career, he frequently appeared in Welsh language productions, for example asEdgar Evans in the 1984 TV filmTerra Nova, and as a soldier inKarl Francis'sMilwr Bychan (1987). Even in more recent years, he has often portrayed Welsh characters, such asOwain Glyndwr in the 2012 BBC adaptation ofHenry IV, Part I.[3][4]

In 2010, Pugh appeared as Tony in the two-partDoctor Who story comprising the episodes "The Hungry Earth" and "Cold Blood".[5] He had a supporting role in 2008 in an episode ofTorchwood, another BBC Wales production.

In 2011 Pugh became Judge Patrick Coburn inJustice.[6] The following year he joinedHBO'sGame of Thrones in the recurring role ofCraster.[7] In 2013 he portrayed Baron Rivers inThe White Queen.[8] Pugh played Jack Reynolds inDoctor Foster,[9] and in 2016 joined the cast ofMr Selfridge as Lord Wynstay, another Welsh character.[10]

In April 2023, Pugh returned toCasualty having originally played paramedic Andrew Pointing in the show's first two series. He played Gethin West, the estranged ex-husband to series regular Jan Jenning, played byDi Botcher. He departed the series again in September later that year, with the character choosing to end his life at a clinic in Switzerland.
