Robert Jackson Bennett (born June 22, 1984) is an American writer ofspeculative fiction.[1][2] His fantasy novelThe Tainted Cup won the 2025Hugo Award for Best Novel[3] and theWorld Fantasy Award for Best Novel.[4]

Early life and education

Robert Jackson Bennett was born inBaton Rouge, Louisiana.[5] He graduated from theUniversity of Texas with special honors in English in 2005,[6] and moved toAustin, Texas.[7]

Career

Bennett's debut as an author was the novelMr. Shivers (2010). He went on to writeThe Company Man (2011),The Troupe (2012), andAmerican Elsewhere (2013).[8][9]

Bennett's fifth novel,City of Stairs (2014), was the first of a fantasy trilogy,The Divine Cities, followed byCity of Blades (2016) andCity of Miracles (2017).The Divine Cities trilogy was a finalist for Best Series for the 2018Hugo Awards.[10]

In August 2018, Crown published Bennett'sFoundryside, the first installment of hisThe Founders Trilogy.[11] That book was followed byShorefall in 2020 andLocklands in 2022.

In February 2024, Del Rey published Bennett'sThe Tainted Cup, the first book in hisThe Shadow of the Leviathan series, which won the 2025Hugo Award for Best Novel.[3] The book was followed byA Drop of Corruption in 2025; a third is planned.[12]
