Riva Ganguly Das (born 24 December 1961[7]) is a retired Indian civil servant who belongs to theIndian Foreign Service cadre. She is the former High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh and former director general of theIndian Council for Cultural Relations, an autonomous organisation of theGovernment of India.

Personal life

Riva Ganguly Das spent her childhood in New Delhi. She obtained apostgraduate degree inPolitical Science from theUniversity of Delhi in 1984. She later taughtPolitical Science at theUniversity of Delhi. She married in 1988 and has two children: a daughter and a son.[citation needed]

Career

She joined theIndian Foreign Service in 1986.[7] Her first posting abroad was in Spain,[2] where she learnt Spanish atMadrid.[citation needed] Thereafter, she worked at theMinistry of External Affairs, Government of India in New Delhi handling External Publicity, Nepal and the Passport & Visa matters.[2] She also headed the Cultural Wing of the IndianHigh Commission inDhaka.[2] Subsequently, she served as the Director of the United Nations Economic and Social Affairs (UNES) Division at theMinistry of External Affairs, Government of India in New Delhi.[8] In this capacity, she was a part of negotiations relating to environmental issues, particularlyclimate change.[2]

Riva Ganguly Das was theDeputy chief of mission at the Indian Embassy inThe Hague and the AlternatePermanent Representative of India to theOrganisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons,The Hague.[8] She also functioned as the Regional Passport Officer inJaipur.[citation needed] From 2008 to 2012, she was the Consul General of India in Shanghai.[8]

Later, she was the Head of thePublic Diplomacy Division at theMinistry of External Affairs, Government of India, New Delhi.[9][8] She also headed the Latin America & Caribbean Division at theMinistry of External Affairs, Government of India, New Delhi.[8][10] In March 2015, Riva Ganguly Das was appointed the Indian Ambassador toRomania.[11] In October 2015, she was concurrently accredited as the Indian Ambassador toAlbania andMoldova, with residence inBucharest (Romania).[4] From March 2016 to July 2017, she served as the Consul General of India in New York City.[12]

In March 2019, she was appointed as theHigh commissioners of India to Bangladesh.[13] In August 2020, She was appointed as theSecretary (East) ofMEA and served their till December 2021.[14][15]
