Rima Kallingal is an Indian actress and film producer who primarily works inMalayalam films.[1]

Early life and work

Born inThrissur,Kerala, Kallingal began practicing dancing when she was three years old.[2] A dancer by profession, she has been a part of a dance company called Nritarutya inBengaluru[3] and has had performances on national and international stages. She is the daughter of Ashokan Kallingal.

Kallingal studied atStanes Anglo-Indian School inCoonoor up to fifth grade.[4] She then completed her schooling atChinmaya Vidyalaya in Thrissur, graduating in 2001. She holds abachelor's degree in Journalism fromChrist University,Bengaluru.[5][6] She is also skilled intaekwondo (Korean martial art), chao (Manipuri martial art), andkalari.[2]

She was a semi-finalist of theAsianet reality showVodafone Thakadhimi. She moved toBengaluru to pursue a modeling career and later participated in the Miss Kerala beauty pageant, in which she became the first runner-up, losing to Shree Thulasi in a tie-breaker.[7]

Career

Kallingal was spotted by directorLal Jose on a magazine cover, who cast her as agoat herder role in Tamil filmMazhai Varappoguthu.[8] The project didn't materialise, but she was offered the lead female character of Varsha by directorShyamaprasad forRitu, which eventually marked her acting debut.[7] She was 25 when she acted in the film.[5]

In 2012, Kallingal played a nurse and rape victim in22 Female Kottayam oppositeFahadh Faasil,[9] which had a decent run at the box office.[10][11] A critic ofNews18 noted, "The film belongs to Rima who sinks into the skin of the character with a spectacular performance."[12][13] The film earned herFilmfare Award for Best Actress – Malayalam andKerala State Film Award for Best Actress.[14][15][16] After22 Female Kottayam, she said that she had made some mistakes in her career and stated "Yes, I have done a few films I never should have, but I am determined not to repeat those mistakes".[13]

In 2013, Kallingal turned television anchor with theMazhavil Manorama reality TV show "Midukki",[17] following which the Kerala Film Chamber imposed a ban on her which was later revoked.[18] That year, Kallingal played a young housewife inAugust Club.[19] Paresh C Palicha ofRediff.com noted, "Rima as Savithri, is someone who has learnt to stifle her feelings and finding other ways to give them an outlet."[20]

Her other notable films include the 2015 filmRani Padmini alongsideManju Warrier and the 2019 filmVirus alongside an ensemble cast.[21][22] Both films emerged commercial successes.[23][24] InRani Padmini, she played a tomboy.[25] Deepa Soman was appreciative of her "knockout performance".[26] InVirus, she played a nurse battle the deadly disease.[27]Sowmya Rajendran found her performance "expressive".[28]

In the 2021 film,Santhoshathinte Onnam Rahasyam, Kallingal played an entertainment reporter oppositeJitin Puthenchery.[29]Baradwaj Rangan found her to be "terrific".[30] The film won her Best Actress at the Diorama International Film Festival.[31]

Kallingal's roles from22 Female Kottayam,August Club andRani Padmini are considered among the strongest female character in Malayalam films.[32][33][34] Kallingal was named theKochi Times Most Desirable Women in 2012.[35] In 2014, she set up her own dance institute, named Mamangam inKochi. It was later was shut down in 2021, because of theCOVID-19 pandemic.[36]

Personal life

Kallingal married directorAashiq Abu on 1 November 2013, in a simple court wedding inKochi.[37] As part of the occasion, the couple donated Rs 1 million towards the welfare of poor cancer patients at the General Hospital,Ernakulam, and Rs 25,000 to meet a day's expense of the dietary kitchen at the hospital.[38][39]
