Richard T. Hoover is an American set designer, production designer, and art director for theater, television, and film.[1] He won the 1999Tony Award for Best Scenic Design forTennessee Williams's playNot About Nightingales[2] and is known for his work on the television showTwin Peaks.[3]
Richard Hoover was born in 1947[1] and grew up in the Midwest.[3] He received his undergraduate degree fromKnox College and a graduate degree from theUniversity of Minnesota.[1] He was a set design apprentice at theGuthrie Theater in Minneapolis.[1]
Hoover's design career began with professional theater in Chicago.[3] He began working in film in 1982.[1] His film credits as production designer includeIt Takes Two (1988),Prime Target (1989), andGirl, Interrupted (1999).[4] He was the production designer for the television seriesTwin Peaks (1990-1991). He was nominated for anEmmy award for the 2002 television filmLive from Baghdad.
OnBroadway, Hoover's credits includeNot About Nightingales, for which he won the 1999 Tony Award for Best Scenic Design. TheNew York Times described Hoover's design as an "intense, vivid production" when it opened in February 1999.[5]
His recent work includes the 2020 television miniseriesThe Plot Against America and the 2023 crime thrillerFinestkind.[4]
