Rhothonemys is an extinctgenus ofbothremydidpleurodiran turtle that was discovered in thePaleogene ofMorocco.[1] The genus consists solely oftype speciesR. brinkmani.
Rhothonemys was discovered in theOuled Abdoun Basin ofMorocco, in deposits dated to thePaleogene. It is known from a partial skull, lacking the palate and basicranium, and a lower jaw, stored in theAmerican Museum of Natural History.[1][2]The genus name is derived from the Greek word ῥώθων (rhothon) "nose" and alludes to the huge nasal opening. The species nameR. brinkmani honors the paleontologistDonald Brinkman.[1]
