Rhombosoleidae is afamily offlatfish, comprising ninegenera and 19species; all members of this family are right eye flounders with asymmetricalpelvic fins. Species are typicallydemersal, living on bottoms intemperatemarine waters on thecontinental shelf, although some species ofRhombosolea enterfresh water inNew Zealand. Most are restricted to waters aroundAustralia and New Zealand, though theRemo flounder,Oncopterus darwinii, occurs in the southwesternAtlantic[1] and theIndonesian ocellated flounder,Psammodiscus ocellatus, occurs inIndonesia.[2]
In some traditional classifications, this group was formerly recognised as a subfamily, Rhombosoleinae, of thePleuronectidae.[3][4]
