Rhodium(III) iodide is aninorganic compound with the formula RhI3. It is a black solid.[1]
Rhodium(III) iodide can be synthesised by the reaction of aqueouspotassium iodide withrhodium(III) bromide.[1]
RhI3 adopts samecrystal structure motif asAlCl3 andYCl3. The structure consists ofcubicclose-packed iodide ions and rhodium ions filling a third of theoctahedral interstices, forming a layers.[2]
Rhodium(III) iodide is only known in theanhydrous form. Unlike the other rhodium(III) halides, it does not formhydrates.[1] The related anion [RhI6]3− was previously thought not to form[1] but has since been prepared by diffusion ofRhCl3·3H2O through a layer ofhydroiodic acid intopiperazine.[3]
