Rineia, orRhenea (Ρήνεια), is aGreekisland in theCyclades. It lies just west of the island ofDelos and further southwest of the island ofMykonos, of which it and Delos are administratively a part. Its area is 14 km2 (5 sq mi). It had a small population until the 1980s, but is currently uninhabited.[citation needed]
In ancient times, the island was known asRheneia (Ancient Greek:Ῥήνεια), and was part of theDelian League.[1] In the 6th century BC, it was subdued by the tyrantPolycrates ofSamos and dedicated to the DelianApollo.[1] The southern half of Rheneia was thenecropolis of Delos.[citation needed] In the sixth year of thePeloponnesian War (426 BCE), theAthenians "purified" Delos by removing all its tombs and prohibiting burials there. Future births and deaths on Delos were prohibited—pregnant women and people close to death were to be carried over to Rheneia.[1][2] Later, the island was incorporated into theRoman Empire.[3]
