René Mayer (French:[ʁənemajɛʁ]; 4 May 1895 – 13 December 1972)[1] was a FrenchRadical politician of theFourth Republic who served briefly as Prime Minister during 1953.[2]
Mayer was born and died inParis. In 1939-1940 he was an associate ofJean Monnet inLondon and later succeeded Monnet as head of theEuropean Coal and Steel Community inLuxembourg, leading theMayer Authority from 1955 to 1958.
He was France's third Prime Minister ofJewish descent, afterAlexandre Millerand andLéon Blum.[citation needed]
