Reishahr (Persian:ری شهر) orRev Ardashir (ریو اردشیر) was a city on thePersian Gulf in medievalIran and is currently an archaeological site nearBushehr. It may be identical to the Antiochia-in-Persis of theSeleucid period, but was refounded byArdashir I (d.AD224), the first ruler of theSasanian Empire. In theChurch of the East, it was seat of themetropolitan bishop of theprovince of Fars from at least 424.[1] The name "Rew-Ardashir" means "Rich is Ardashir".[2]
The city is mentioned by many historians, such asFarhang-i Anandraj,Hamdollah Mostowfi'sNuzhat al-Qulub,Majmal al-tawarikh, andIbn Balkhi'sFarsnameh. In particular, some historians such asYaqut al-Hamawi'sMu'jam Al-Buldan write of the city being centered on a pre-Islamic academic center of higher learning where scholars converged to study medicine as well as Indian and Greek sciences.[3]
Dehkhoda dictionary mentions that the city was eventually deserted and its inhabitants moved to Bushehr.
