Reichenau (German pronunciation:[ˈʁaɪçənaʊ]ⓘ) is a municipality in the district ofKonstanz inBaden-Württemberg inGermany. It is located partly onReichenau Island with its famous abbey and on the northern shore of theUntersee section ofLake Constance. The island has historically been the center of the community. The administrative seat of the municipality is in the village ofMittelzell. Acauseway built in 1838 connects the isle with the mainland. The municipality consists of the settlementsNiederzell,Mittelzell undOberzell on the island as well asLindenbühl andWaldsiedlung on the shore.
The municipality encompasses the estates of the formerReichenau Abbey, which wassecularized in 1757. Today Reichenau is characterized by themarket gardening of fruits and vegetables and also known for itspsychiatric hospital, established in 1913, ateaching hospital of theUniversity of Konstanz.
Reichenau can be reached via theBundesstraße 33 running from theBundesautobahn 81 toKonstanz. It has also a railway station on theHigh Rhine Railway (Hochrheinbahn) connectingBasel and Konstanz.
Reichenau (Baden) is a railway station on theHigh Rhine Railway line. It is served by regional trains toKonstanz andSingen (Hohentwiel), viaRadolfzell.
Reichenau has alanding stage. Between spring and autumn, theURh offers regular boat services on theHigh Rhine andUntersee betweenSchaffhausen andKreuzlingen, viaKonstanz.
