Madagascar is divided into 24regions (faritra). The regions arede facto first-level administrative divisions of the country, although they are formally subordinate to the sixprovinces.
The subdivision of Madagascar's provinces into regions dates to 2004, when 22 regions were established.[1] In 2021,Vatovavy-Fitovinany was split into the regions ofFitovinany andVatovavy.[2] The law creatingAmbatosoa from the northern part ofAnalanjirofo was enacted in 2023 and the new region was inaugurated in 2025.[3][4]
