TheRed Lake State Forest is aMinnesotastate forest located primarily inBeltrami County, although portions extend intoKoochiching County. The forest borders thePine Island State Forest to the east andUpper Red Lake to the west.Minnesota State Highway 72 runs through the forest.
The location ofLake Agassiz in the area led to the flattopography of the forest, which is dotted withwetlands andbogs, asandy loam is throughout. The vast expanses ofold-growthnorthern whitecedar andpine were extensivelylogged in the early 20th century. The landscape is now dominated byblack spruce,tamarack, and northern whitecedar in the lowlands;aspen, pine, andbalsam fir predominate in upland sites.
Popularoutdoor recreational activities in the forest includefishing andhunting.Trails are designated forhiking, as well assnowmobiling in the wintertime.Camping is available at acampground near the town ofWaskish and throughout the forest in the form ofdispersed camping[2]
