
Arecreation room (also known as arec room,rumpus room,play room,playroom,games room, orruckus room) is aroom used for a variety of purposes, such asparties,games and other everyday or casual activities. The termrecreation room is most prevalent in the United States, whilerumpus room is more common in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. In the United Kingdom, the most common term isgames room, or sometimesden. Some, however, will have a room specific to one particular game or entertainment unit often found in a recreation room, or some have asnug, which is a smaller cosy room for watching films and playingvideo games. Often children and teenagers entertain their friends in their home's recreation room, which is often located in thebasement, away from the main living areas of thehouse.[1][2] Usually it is a larger space than aliving room, enabling the area to serve multiple purposes and entertain moderately large groups.[3]

Recreation rooms can have many themes and contents, depending on their intended use.[4]
Recreation rooms are normally centered on some form of entertainment, typically an audio/video setup. This can consist of something as elaborate as aprojection screen with surround sound or something as simple as a base modeltelevision.[5][6]
Couches, pub tables/chairs,bar stools,bean bag chairs,[7][8] andrecliners may all be used in recreation rooms.[9]
Tabletop games are frequent in recreation rooms. In addition to games played on a normal table, recreation rooms sometimes include custom game tables fortable tennis (ping pong),table football (foosball),table shuffleboard,air hockey, orbilliards (pool). Custom tables forcasino games such aspoker,blackjack, andcraps are also common. Other games includedart boards andarcade games such aspinball and video games. More substantial game rooms may have minibowling lanes, indoorgolf simulators, and other specialty amenities.[10][3]
Refrigerators,microwave ovens,wet bars,[11]popcorn makers,ice cream makers, andsoda fountains can sometimes be found in recreation rooms.
