TheRecord of Monuments and Places (RMP;Irish:Taifead ar Shéadchomharthaí agus Áiteanna) is a list of historical and archaeological sites theRepublic of Ireland established under the National Monuments Acts.
It can be consulted in county libraries and local authority offices and online and is maintained by theDepartment of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht's National Monuments Service.[1]
Each site receives a symbol of the formatXX00-001---, where XX are two letters to indicate thecounty. Subsites of a site are in the formatXX00-00101-. For example, theAghade Holed Stone (located inCounty Carlow) has the RMP codeCW013-032---. It is alsoNational Monument number 347; the two numbering schemes are not connected.[2]
While many sites recorded on the RMP are protected under the National Monuments Acts, not all entries are automatically affordedheritage protection.[3]
The National Monuments Service [..] will advise on the protection applying to any particular monument [..] entered in the Record of Monuments and Places and should be consulted if there is any doubt as to the status [..The..] Archaeological Survey Database can be of assistance in checking whether a graveyard/monument is likely to be subject to legal protection under the National Monuments Acts, but is not conclusive
