Ray Gunn is an upcoming American animatedneo-noirscience fictionaction film directed byBrad Bird, who also wrote the original story and developed the script withMatthew Robbins. Produced bySkydance Animation, the film is set for release onNetflix in 2026.[2][3]
The film follows Raymond Gunn, the last human private detective, in a futuristic world inhabited by humans and aliens.[3]
Brad Bird wrote the original story forRay Gunn as amystery film set in "the sprawling, magnificent city of Metropia", an alternate future and then went on to develop the script withMatthew Robbins.[4] Originally, the film was intended to be produced byTurner Feature Animation in the 1990s, but it was shelved when Bird went on to directThe Iron Giant (1999) atWarner Bros. Feature Animation instead followingTurner's merger withTime Warner in 1996.[5] Despite this, Bird did not forget about hisRay Gunn project, stating that he negotiated for the rights to the material and tellingWarner Bros. that, "Either let's make it or let me try to make it somewhere else."[2] Apparently, when Bird came toPixar, Bird offered themRay Gunn, but the studio chose to produceThe Incredibles (2004) instead, andRay Gunn was never produced by Pixar.[6]
In February 2022, it was announced that Bird would reviveRay Gunn forSkydance Animation after it being dormant for decades.[7] That July, Bird describedRay Gunn as a more adult project in the noir genre, "sort of a detective film in an alternate future" that follows protagonist Raymond Gunn. He stated, "If you mashed upThe Maltese Falcon (1930) withBuck Rogers (1929–1967), it might be something like that. But hopefully with a bit more action and funnier."[2] In October 2023, it was reported that the film would becomputer-animated instead ofhand-drawn, and that the budget had been trimmed,[8] which would later be revealed to be $150+ million.[1] Following the announcement of Pixar'sIncredibles 3 (2028) in August 2024,TheWrap reported thatRay Gunn was still in development, and that it would be released byNetflix in 2026.[9] His commitment to the project would cause Bird to step away from directing his screenplay forIncredibles 3, choosingPeter Sohn to replace him as director.[10]Skydance Animation Madrid's VP of Finance and Operations, Carolina Borreguero Sanz, confirmed in October 2025 that Bird's project with the studio (identified asRay Gunn in an article fromThe Hollywood Reporter) would release after the studio's third film,Swapped, both in 2026.[3] In late 2025,Sam Rockwell,Scarlett Johansson andJamie Costa were revealed as parts of the cast via test screenings and an interview.[11][12][13]
Some of the animation for the film was provided bySkydance Animation Madrid.[14] By April 2025, animation was underway atCinesite Animation.[15] In September 2025, during an appearance atFanX,John Ratzenberger revealed that he had begun voice recording for the film.[16]
On July 27, 2022,Michael Giacchino, a longtime frequent collaborator with Bird, was announced to compose the film's musical score.[17]
Ray Gunn is scheduled to be released onNetflix in 2026.[3] It was originally set to be released byApple TV.[7]
