Ravish Kumar (bornRavish Kumar Pandey; 5 December 1974)[1][2] is an Indian journalist, author, media personality andYouTuber.[3][4] He was the Senior Executive Editor ofNDTV India. He hosted a number of programmes including the channel's flagship weekday showPrime Time,Hum Log,Ravish Ki Report, andDes Ki Baat.[5][6][7]

Kumar has twice been conferred withRamnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award for theBest Journalist of the Year and became the fifth Indian journalist to receive theRamon Magsaysay Award in 2019.[8][9]

Early life and education

Kumar was born on 5 December 1974 in Jitwarpur village inEast Champaran district ofBihar,[10][11] to Baliram Pandey and Yashoda Pandey.[12] He obtained his high school education fromLoyola High School, Patna. Later he moved toDelhi for higher studies. He graduated fromDeshbandhu College, affiliated with theUniversity of Delhi.[12] Eventually he enrolled inpost-graduate diploma inHindi Journalism from theIndian Institute of Mass Communication.[12][13]

Career

NDTV career

From 1994 to 2022, he was employed byNDTV India, eventually as a senior director.[14] He hosted several programmes, including the channel's flagship weekday showPrime Time,Hum Log,[15]Ravish Ki Report[16] andDes Ki Baat.[17]

He has received death threats in the past for his journalism.[18][19][20]

On 30 November 2022, he resigned fromNDTV, a day after the channel's founders and promotersPrannoy Roy andRadhika Roy resigned as directors on the board of RRPR Holding Private Limited (RRPRH).[21][22](See alsoAcquisition of NDTV by Adani Group.)

YouTube career

Ravish Kumar started a YouTube channel after resigning from his job.[23] On 5 May 2024, his channel reached the milestone of 10 million subscribers.[24][25]

Kumar has been conferred various awards for his work in journalism including theRamon Magsaysay Award (2019). He has been two times recipient of theRamnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award (2017, 2013) for the broadcast category in the Hindi language. The list continues withGauri Lankesh Award for Journalism, firstKuldip Nayar Journalism Award (2017),Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Award for Hindi Journalism and Creative Literature (for 2010, awarded in 2014). He was included in the list of 100 most influential Indians (2016) byThe Indian Express and also namedJournalist of the Year by the Mumbai Press Club.[26][8][27][28][29][30][9]

Kumar was awarded theHonorary Title for Freedom of Expression for his critical and independent journalism in India by theVrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and theUniversité libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Brussels, Belgium on the occasion ofWorld Press Freedom Day, 2023.[31]

Personal life

Kumar is married to Nayana Dasgupta who teaches history at theLady Shri Ram College,University of Delhi. He has two daughters- Tanima and Tanisha.[32][33]
