He began his career atCaen, signing in 2013 withLorient where he made hisLigue 1 debut. In June 2016, he joinedBorussia Dortmund, going on to win twoDFB-Pokal and the2019 DFL-Supercup while totalling 224 games and 40 goals.[3] He moved to Bayern Munich in 2023 on a free transfer.
Born inLe Blanc-Mesnil,Seine-Saint-Denis to a Portuguese father and a French mother, Guerreiro played youth football for three clubs, finishing his development atCaen after signing in 2009 at the age of 15.[4] After starting as a senior with thereserve team, he made his professional debut in the2012–13 season, appearing in all the games and failing to start only once in an eventual fourth-place finish inLigue 2; he was also elected to theTeam of the Year.[5]
On 27 June 2013, Guerreiro moved toLigue 1 after signing a four-year contract withLorient.[6] His maiden appearance in the competition took place on 10 August, as he featured the full 90 minutes in a 1–0 away loss againstLille.[7]
On 1 November 2014, Guerreiro scored his first goal for Lorient, opening the scoring at title-holdersParis Saint-Germain in an eventual 2–1 defeat.[8] He finishedthe campaign with seven goals to help his team stave off relegation,[9] including the equaliser as they came from behind to defeat his former employers 2–1 at theStade du Moustoir.[10]
On 27 May 2023, in the last matchday, Guerreiro scored his fourth goal ofthe season – he also totalled 12 assists[18]– to help the hosts to come back from a 2–0 deficit againstMainz 05 and draw 2–2, butDer Klassiker rivalsBayern Munich defeated1. FC Köln 2–1 away and were crownedBundesliga champions instead.[19] The following day, Dortmund announced the departure of five players, including Guerreiro.[20]
On 23 June 2023, Bayern Munich announced that they had secured Guerreiro as afree agent;[21] he agreed to a three-year deal.[22][23] He made his debut for the club on 26 September,coming off the bench in a 4–0 away win overPreußen Münster in thefirst round of theDFB-Pokal.[24] He scored his first goal on 11 November, taking the field at the hour mark and netting the Bavarians' third in a 4–2 league home victory against1. FC Heidenheim.[25]
On 8 March 2025, Guerreiro netted twice in the first half of the home fixture againstVfL Bochum, the second goal coming through aheader, but his compatriotJoão Palhinha wassent off late into it as the opposition came from behind to take it 3–2 for their first ever win at Bayern's ground.[26]
Guerreiro returned to the under-21s for the2015 UEFA European Championship in the Czech Republic, helping them finish in second place.[32] He was one of five Portuguese included in the Team of the Tournament.[33]
In spite of an injury-riddledseason,[38] Guerreiro was picked for the2018 FIFA World Cup.[39] He started four matches in Russia, in a round-of-16 exit.[40]
In November 2022, Guerreiro was named in the final squad for the2022 FIFA World Cup.[44] On 6 December, he scored his team's fourth in an eventual 6–1 rout ofSwitzerland inLusail in the round of 16.[45]
Guerreiro sustained an ankle injury in May 2024 which kept him out ofEuro 2024.[46]
In 2014, Guerreiro said that he supportedBenfica, dreamed of playing forReal Madrid, and that his favourite player wasCristiano Ronaldo. His Portugal under-21 manager, Rui Jorge, remembered him as a very introverted character, in part due to his language difficulties.[28]
Guerreiro and his family used to watch matches of the Portugal national team, of whichPauleta was a footballer he admired.[47]
