Ranuccio Farnese (11 August 1530 – 29 October 1565) was an Italian prelate of theFarnese family, who wasCardinal ofSanta Lucia in Selci from 1545 to his death in 1565. Son ofPier Luigi Farnese, the illegitimate son ofPope Paul III, Farnese was created Cardinal at the age of 15 by his grandfather thepope: he was nicknamed thecardinalino ("little cardinal") for his young age.
Ranuccio Farnese was born inValentano. As a 12-year-old, he was madeprior of theKnights of Malta's important property San Giovanni dei Forlani inVenice. He was also administrator of thearchdiocese of Naples, and was granted severalbishoprics; Farnese was twice the titularLatin Patriarch of Constantinople, from 1546 to 1550 and 1554?-1565. Farnese waspatron toFederico Commandino, an important translator ofancient Greek mathematical works.
Farnese's brother,Ottavio Farnese, wasDuke of Parma, and his brotherAlessandro Farnese was also a cardinal.
He is buried in theArchbasilica of St. John Lateran inRome.
