Ramya Krishnan (born 15 September 1970),[1] also credited asRamya Krishna, is an Indian actress known predominantly for her work inTelugu andTamil films, along with appearances inKannada,Malayalam andHindi films.[2]
Ramya was born on 15 September 1970 in Madras (present-dayChennai) to aTelugu father.[1][3] She is the niece ofTamil film actor and formerMember of Parliament, Rajya SabhaCho Ramaswamy.[4]
She started her acting career with the Malayalam filmNeram Pularumbol. Although this was the first movie where she acted, it had a delayed release in 1986. Her first release wasVellai Manasu in 1985, a Tamil movie oppositeY. G. Mahendra. Her first Telugu film wasBhalae Mithrulu (1986). Then she went on to play supporting roles inTamil films which includePadikkadavan (1985) starringRajinikanth where she was given a uncredited role andPer Sollum Pillai (1987) starringKamal Haasan. In Telugu, she starred withRajendra Prasad inMadana Gopaludu (1987),Bhama Kalapam (1988),Asthulu Anthasthulu (1988) andBava Marudula Saval (1988). She worked in Malayalam films such asOrkkappurathu,Aryan andAnuragi withMohanlal. She enjoyed success in Kannada movies as well. One of her earlier roles as heroine was inKrishna Rukmini opposite superstarVishnuvardhan. She played a small role in the Hindi filmDayavan that starred veteran actorVinod Khanna.[5]
After a series of failures in both Tamil andTelugu, she achieved fame throughK. Viswanath'sSutradharulu, released in 1989. Her breakthrough came fromK. Raghavendra Rao directorial movies where she emerged as a commercial romantic diva, due to successful movies such asAlludugaru (1990),Allari Mogudu (1992),Major Chandrakanth (1993) along withMohan Babu andAllari Priyudu (1993) along withRajasekhar. She played the role of a devoted wife ofSri Annamacharya, which was played byNagarjuna in the filmAnnamayya (1997). In 1998, she played a leading role inKante Koothurne Kanu. She received aNandi Award for Best Actress from theGovernment of Andhra Pradesh for her performance in the film. Her biggest Kannada hits includeGadibidi Ganda (1993) andMangalyam Tantunanena (1998) withRavichandran.
Ramya made her debut as a heroine inHindi films withYash Chopra'sParampara (1993). She acted in a few more Hindi films includingSubhash Ghai'sKhalnayak (1993),Mahesh Bhatt'sChaahat (1996),David Dhawan'sBanarasi Babu (1997), andBade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998) along withAmitabh Bachchan andGovinda andShapath withMithun Chakraborty.
After a four-year break from Tamil cinema, in 1999, Ramya played the female antagonist, Neelambari inPadayappa oppositeRajinikanth. The critic fromRediff stated "Ramya does a fantastic job. She is vicious to her dying breath, when she declares she will revenge herself in her next life. She does a fabulous tandav of rage when her father commits suicide".[6] She went onto receive several awards includingFilmfare Award for Best Actress - Tamil andTamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize. She then starred in commercially successful films likeBudget Padmanabhan andPanchatanthiram. The critic fromScreen called her performance inPanchatanthiram "one of the finest performances ever".[7]Ramya has also acted in many devotional films includingRajakali Amman (2000),Nageswari (2001),Sri Raja Rajeshwari (2001) andAnnai Kaligambal (2003).
Her notable film in Malayalam wasOre Kadal (2007) withMammootty, which receivedthe National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam. She had acted as the mother-in-law ofN. T. Rama Rao Jr. in the movieNaa Alludu (2005) marked for her role and later in the filmKonchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam (2009). She also appeared in a guest role in item songs in Tollywood and Kollywood.
She turned to acting in TV serials before hosting a game show calledThanga Vettai, onSun TV, and judging a dance show,Jodi Number One, onVijay TV. Ramya is stepping in television serials for the first time. She was seen inKalasam in two roles. One of them is Neelambari, a character she played in theRajinikanth starrerPadayappa. In 2009, she appeared inSuresh Krissna'sArumugam andRama Narayanan'sKutti Pisasu.[8]
She continued her stay under theSun TV banner to act inThangam,Vamsam andRajakumari. Later, she acted in supporting roles in Telugu asRanga The Donga (2010),Yamudiki Mogudu (2012) and in Kannada asSweety Nanna Jodi (2013) andMaanikya (2014).

In 2015, Ramya acted inS.S. Rajamouli's filmBaahubali: The Beginning and its sequelBaahubali: The Conclusion, where she played Rajamata Sivagami Devi. Her performance met with the critical acclaim and the films became thehighest grossing Indian films. Sangeetha Devi Dundoo praised Ramya's performance and stated "Ramya Krishnan once again aces with her part".[9] She received theFilmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress - Telugu for both films. In 2019, she played a porn actress inSuper Deluxe directed byThiagarajan Kumararaja. Srivatsan S fromThe Hindu stated her role as "boldest role yet".[10][11]
She made her debut in the digital platform withQueen in 2019.[12] The critic fromIndia Today stated, "Ramya Krishnan as the failing actress and a budding politician (the later part of Shakthi's life) puts in a measured performance and it is what stands out in a series that relies heavily on performances".[13] In 2022, Ramya appeared inDharma Productions andPuri Jagannadh's sports action filmLiger.[14] The 2023 Tamil filmJailer featured Ramya in the lead role asRajinikanth's wife.[15]
In 2025, she played an important role in theHindi language filmJaat, which starsSunny Deol and was directed byGopichand Malineni and produced byMythri Movie Makers andZee Studios.[16]
She marriedTelugu film directorKrishna Vamsi[17] on 12 June 2003. The couple have a son.[18]
